People of the Gurung community are organised various programmes to mark the end of the Year of Cows and the beginning of the Year of Tigers. The community celebrates Lhosar every year on Poush 15 by the Bikram era.

The festival is celebrated by taking blessings from elders and exchanging good wishes with each other. Gurungs in capital Kathmandu organised a special function at Tundikhel to celebrate the New Year.

In Gurung language, Lhosar means new year. At least three Lhosars including today's Tamu Lhosar and Sherpa Lhosar are celebrated in Nepal by different ethnic communities.

On the occasion of Lhosar, President Ram Baran Yadav, Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal, Nepali Congress president Girija Prasad Koirala and CPN (UML) chairman Jhala Nath Khanal issued separate messages wishing for peace and prosperity in the new year to persons of Gurung community
